Kentucky State University Mission Statement

Kentucky State University, building on its legacy of achievement as a historically black, liberal arts, and 1890 land-grant university, affords access to and prepares a diverse student population of traditional and non-traditional students to compete in a multifaceted, ever-changing global society by providing student-centered learning while integrating teaching, research, and service through high-quality undergraduate and select graduate programs. Kentucky State University is committed to keeping relevant its legacy of service by proactively engaging the community in partnerships on civic projects driven by the objective of positively impacting the quality of life of the citizens of the Commonwealth.

Intercollegiate Athletics Statement of Purpose and Philosophy

Participation in intercollegiate athletics at Kentucky State University is a valuable opportunity for all student-athletes to supplement their education through sports. The purpose is to provide the highest potential for amateur athletic excellence within the University’s educational framework.

Intercollegiate athletics serves the mission of the University and its primary concern is to provide an educational setting for student-athletes to achieve a maximum degree of educational, physical, emotional and social development through sound skill acquisition and challenging competition. The strength of intercollegiate athletics at Kentucky State University resides in the ability to encourage academic excellence first, while providing highly skilled student-athletes with opportunities to fully develop their abilities. Academic and athletic excellence can, and should be, mutually reinforcing.

Intercollegiate athletics, like other extracurricular activities sponsored by the University, offer participants a positive experience and an opportunity to develop personal skills and values such as dedication, perseverance, responsibility, team effort and cooperation, discipline, self-confidence, leadership, and citizenship. By providing participants with the opportunities to develop these values, intercollegiate athletics serves the broad educational and developmental purposes of a University education.

Mission Statement

To provide a comprehensive program that emphasizes academic, athletic and personal excellence.  Embracing the objectives and purpose of KSU, the athletics program provides opportunities for students to compete and develop successfully, grow as responsible citizens and maintain a varied program of educational experiences.  The department seeks to promote an environment that emphasizes fair play, integrity, sportsmanship, education and overall health and fitness by recruiting, retaining and graduating nationally competitive student-athletes and by hiring staff members committed to the highest level of professional integrity.

 Objectives

1.   Equal Opportunity. To provide an equal opportunity for all student-athletes of good character and good academic standing to compete in organized intercollegiate athletics at the highest level while pursuing the baccalaureate degree.

2.   Student Involvement. To provide an opportunity for each student-athlete to grow as a total person by enabling involvement in student life and providing the tools that will aid the student-athlete after graduation.

3.   Community Outreach. To utilize intercollegiate athletics as a means to reach and draw together the University community, the alumni, and the people of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and to provide a source of institutional pride for alumni, faculty, and students through athletic competitiveness and academic integrity.

4.   Ethical Integrity. To ensure, in all areas of intercollegiate athletics, that the Kentucky State University demands and functions with integrity, high moral and ethical standards, and strict adherence to the spirit and letter of all Kentucky State University, SIAC, and NCAA rules.
