ATLANTA – After going 5-1 over six games at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Division Cluster, Kentucky State had two volleyball players receive SIAC weekly awards, the conference announced Wednesday.
Kiara Rivera was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week, and
Anjelique Kyle was selected as the Setter of the Week.
Rivera, a senior defensive specialist from Puerto Rico, took the defensive honor after recording 63 digs across the Kentucky State's six matches at the West Division Cluster. Though the Thorobrettes suffered their only conference loss of the season against Spring Hill on Friday, Rivera put forth a strong performance in the match with 22 digs.
Kyle, a junior setter from Houston, Texas, tallied 184 assists for an average of 9.2 per set over the weekend to earn the Setter of the Week honor. She had a high of 47 assists in the loss to Spring Hill and contributed 41 in a win over Tuskegee. Kyle contributed across the board for the Thorobrettes, also finishing with 16 aces, 12 kills, and 25 digs over the six matches.
No strangers to SIAC awards, Rivera's honor is her third Defensive Player of the Week award this season, and Kyle's selection is her second Setter of the Week honor. The performances come following a 2014 season in which Kyle was named the conference's Setter of the Year, and Rivera was selected as Newcomer of the Year.
In other weekly SIAC volleyball honors, Tuskegee's Pamela Allen was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate Jamiah Breda-Nixon claimed the Newcomer of the Week award.
For the season, Kentucky State currently stands at 18-8 overall and 17-1 in SIAC play. The Thorobrettes return to the court tonight at Kentucky Wesleyan and will host Asbury in their next home match on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Exum Center.
