FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 2, 2012) – Kentucky State University's Volleyball Coach, Kyetta May, has announced that she has accepted the head coaching position at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
“I would like to thank Dr. Mary Evans Sias and Derita Ratcliffe for giving me the opportunity at KSU as a young coach,” said May. “They played a huge part in grooming and developing me as a young coach and professional.”
May, who begins at UAPB on May 25, spent the last five years serving as KSU's head coach, where she amassed a record of 125-81 and captured back-to-back Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship titles (2010 and 2011). She led the Thorobrettes to five consecutive SIAC West Division Titles and coached 16 All-Conference selections, two SIAC tournament MVPs, one Daktronics South All-Region selection and was the SIAC Coach of the Tournament consecutive years (2010, 2011) and was named SIAC Coach of the Year in 2008.
“We are very excited for Coach May,” said KSU Director of Athletics, Dr. Denisha L. Hendricks. “She did a wonderful job at KSU and we wish her nothing but the best as she moves forward in her career.”
May came to KSU from Harris-Stowe State University, where she was Head Volleyball Coach for two seasons. May began her coaching career volunteering at East St. Louis Sr. High School and after several years in the Environmental Science field, she accepted a part-time position as the Head Volleyball Coach at Harris-Stowe State University. After two seasons of coaching at HSSU, she took the position of Junior Varsity Coach at Clayton High School. After one season of coaching at CHS, May was promoted to Head Varsity Coach, but May chose to accept the Head Volleyball Coach position at Kentucky State University.
“I had a great career at KSU, but I'm excited for this new journey and new chapter at UAPB,” May stated.
She played college volleyball at Alabama A&M University for 4 seasons, 1998-2002 and was a member of two consecutive SWAC Championship teams (2000 & 2001). She served as team captain in 2001, was an Arthur Ash Jr. Sports Scholar and earned the AAMU Scholar Athlete award for 4 years. In 2000, May was named the Lady Speedstick Sportswoman of the Year and also the recipient of the Street & Smith, Eddie Robinson Awards.
May earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science with chemistry minor from Alabama A&M University and her Master of Science degree in Education from Lindenwood University.
